it's a bird....it's a plane....it's a fabulous superman movie!!

It was everything I had hoped for and more. When it comes to superhero movies, there are two kinds of films that get made. First, you get the cheesy, good fun ones that you watch, eat your popcorn, and thoroughly enjoy. I think of something like "The Phantom" for this kind. It is a fabulous (terrible) flick starring Billy Zane and a very young Catherine Zeta Jones as a villain to boot. Then, you have the kind of superhero film that breaks your heart. It is brilliant, exciting, and you become personally invested in the characters. An example of this would be the brilliant "Spiderman" franchise directed by Sam Raimi. "Superman Returns" falls into the second category. It is fun, the action sequences are unbelievable, it is also hilarious, and the actors are great. I thought when I watched the preview that Kevin Spacey might be too much as Lex Luthor, but he is so great. Kudos to Parker Posey for making a thankless part both funny and engaging. Kate Bosworth is surprising as Lois Lane...surprising in the fact that I thought she was decent, and did a good job. Brandon Routh is adorable as Clark Kent/Superman. Although, to be honest, he sometimes looks so much like Christopher Reeves that it is downright creepy. Bryan Singer proves yet again what an accomplished director he is...and that he has the superhero crown firmly in his hands. So....this is definitely one to see on the big screen. Run...do not walk....to the theatre, grab your popcorn, and sit down for a fun-yet-meaningful movie. Total bonus: The "Spiderman 3" teaser is UNBELIEVABLE!!! It is going to be fabulous!!
