quote of the day

Lance Bass is gay, and I for one am devastated. I am seeing a disturbing trend in the boys that I have crushes on. First, the one N*SYNC band member I like is gay....then, the cast member that I thought was cute from Jersey Boys was referred to as their very own Liberace during a backstage internet tour. What is going on? I put this question to my co-workers. And it led to today's quote of the day.

Beth: Why am I always attracted to the gay men?

Quote of the day: That is like the definition of being an artist...being attracted to gay men.

I totally should have become an accountant.

concerns

I am concerned. Once again, I find myself turning into my mother. I mean, she is a lovely person, and I will be lucky to be half the person she is...but she can be a bit manic. First, I compulsively look for my bag about every ten minutes, regardless if my situation has changed. For instance, I could be in a car....for like five hours, and will look for my bag about four times an hour on that trip. Second, we both want to see the movie "Step Up". It looks like s lightly ghetto dance movie, and tons of fun. You might think that I told my mother about it, and she agreed it sounded fun. No. In fact, she called me and said that she knew the next movie she was going to see. Third, I have an unnatural love of all things dairy. Anything can be enhanced by adding a dairy product...whether it is adding butter or eating things like ice cream or cottage cheese. Fourth, I watch the Food Channel constantly, and have come to believe that yes, my mother and Ina Garten could be great friends if given the chance. And finally, we both believe that cereal is both a meal and a snack. It is a yummy treat that should be eaten all the time. At what point do we actually transition into our parents? I mean, at what point should you all start calling me Carolyn, and try to guess how many pairs of black pants I own?

P.S. I am also noticing some disturbing trends I may be adopting from my father. I will keep you updated.

beth recommends: best burger in NYC

NYC has so much to offer...theatre, art, etc. It also has amazing food. Today, I would like to recommend what I consider the best burger place in NYC. On the upper west side around 76th and Broadway is a burger joint called Big Nicks. A trip to NYC without a burger there is just plain foolishness. My favorite is the gorganzola burger...which is a burger with tons of gorgonzola melted on top. It is sinful heaven. Bonus trivia: The skit on SNL about the "cheeseburger, cheeseburger" diner I believe is based on Big Nicks. So, when you come to the city, make sure to check it out.

a birthday movie, and a birthday ponder

So, it was my birthday, and of course I went to see a movie. It was "My Super Ex-Girlfriend". Although it had some funny moments, it was essentially a piece of poop...don't go see it.

While I was sitting through the movie, it got me a pondering....which Wilson brother do I prefer? Owen or Luke.

I think this is a good test of the "type" of man you are into. You have the athletic, blonde, fun, and carefree Owen, versus the slightly more serious brunette Luke.

After much thought (well the movie was about an hour and a half which I will never get back), I have decided that my Wilson brother is Luke. (Although I would throw them both over for Gerard Butler.)

Final thoughts: Only go to this movie if you are dumb.

a little older, a little wiser

Yes friends, yesterday was my birthday and I am now well on my way to 30. I can't even tell you how freaky that is to think about. I mean, on the inside, I feel like I am 19 years old. I don't know...I think I am now officially an adult, and yet I sure don't feel like it. I guess that is true for everyone though....does anyone really feel that they are old as they are? Deep thoughts from someone who is a little older and a little wiser.

my perfect day of unemployment

So, I am without a job for a day, three guesses as to what I did. You're right! I did in fact go and see two movies. It was lovely. I started by making a journey down to the lower East Side to find a movie theatre that was playing a movie called "Peaceful Warrior". Based on a book by Dan Millman, it follows a college gymnast who makes friends with a gas station attendant who helps coach him into being a better person. Full of cliches and preaching, this movie was perfect for my day of unemployment. It wasn't a great movie, but it was so cheesy, and so much fun...I am so glad I saw it. Nick Nolte plays the creepy, weird gas station attendant. He does a really good job. (I have to add that I got so lost...and at one point, it looked as if I wasn't going to find the theatre, or my way back to the west side! It was all very dramatic, and if at some point I get a movie camera, I will recreate it and put it on youtube.com.)

The second movie I checked out is the comedy "You, Me and Dupree". It was cute but it wasn't fabulous. I really hoped it would be funnier than it was, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I don't know...just feel kind of lukewarm about it. I guess my thing is that Kate Hudson is fabulous. I really like her, and she seems to be doing all of these so-so movies. She is lovely in this, funny, sweet, beautiful, and it just seems like a waste. This was a Jennifer Aniston part. There were rumors that Kate Hudson would be doing "Can you Keep a Secret" a book by Sophie Kinsella, and I so hope that comes to fruition. She would be FABULOUS in that...loved the book. Matt Dillon is fine and Owen Wilson plays annoying well. A fun movie that just doesn't quite come together to be hilarious.

Final thoughts: I enjoyed both....but neither were amazing. A perfect way to spend a day of unemployment though.

jersey girl

Although I wish daily that I was living Liv Tyler's life, I am in fact not the lead in a Kevin Smith film. I am however making my daily commute out to the theatre that I am working at in New Jersey. So far....it is fabulous. I can't even express how happy I am to be working at a theatre again. It just truly makes me happy deep in my soul. I am covering a maternity leave for someone, so I will work with her until August 4th, and then I am on my own!! Wish me luck.

quote of the day

"Dear God....thank you for all of the food. Except the turnip."

This is from the movie "Sarah, Plain and Tall" that I watched on the Hallmark channel this weekend. There are actually three films with the same characters, and I have seen the first two. Some thoughts: they are actually quite good. Christopher Walken is less creepy than he has been in the past. Also, Glenn Close is quite good....although she is neither plain nor tall. I am secretly hoping that they make this into a musical starring yours truly...as I am both plain and tall. (he he)

weekend of unemployment

Yes friends, this weekend I am jobless. I have left my position as an event planner in Manhattan, and am now going to be the event planner at a theatre in New Jersey. I am terrified, excited, nervous, and thrilled. Plan to expect lots of commute stories as I travel to the other side of the world....aka.....New Jersey.

another new obsession

I have another summer TV show that I am totally getting into. It is called "Kyle XY" and it plays on ABC Family. It is basically about this teenager who wakes up in the middle of the forest, covered with ooze, and with no memory of anything. He is taken in by this family and hilarity ensues. There are two reasons to watch this show. First, I mean, well, just look at the guy who plays the lead? And second, the unbelievable product placement of Sour Patch Kids, the sponsor of the show. I mean, sour patch kids are not like cereal...there is not an easy way to work them in....and it is just plain fun to watch conversations about them.

beth's dork flag....flying high and proud

It's a bird....it's a plane....it's "Superman Returns" on IMAX 3-D!! I can't think of a better way to spend a Tuesday night in the city of New York than at the 68th Street IMAX theatre watching "Superman Returns" in 3-D. Yes folks, that flag you see flying high and proud is my dork flag. The roomie and I went to see it, and it was amazing. I loved this movie even more than when I saw it on the regular screen with the parents. It took a fun, popcorn-action-summer flick, and took the best action sequences and made it 3-D. It was unbelievable. If you have the chance to see this movie this way....take it! Do not pass go....do not collect $200....go directly to the theatre and buy your tickets for the next available show. It is so worth it. If you have already seen the flick, the sequences that they made 3-D are the "growing up" sequence on the farm, the "Spaceship-airplane" sequence, and the "Titanic yacht" sequence. I can't even tell you...it was just movie-going at it's best. Of course, the theatre was sold out...every seat filled and people were so ready to see this movie. In NYC, these showings have been sold out for days ahead of time...so once you are in, it's good news indeed. I wanted to add this pic of me in my special head-gear. Yes..please laugh, I look dorky. But just imagine if you are at a movie theatre full of like 500 people wearing them all together. Woo-hoo!

everyone else's dork flag is showing

So, Richard and I get to our movie that we are seeing...and a preview that I have never seen before comes on. It turns out to be a preview for the live action film "Transformers". I am not lying when I say the theatre erupted with cheering, clapping, and hollering. It was so bizarre. Am I missing something? I mean, my brother had the dolls (can I call them that?) or rather toys, but I guess I didn't realize how BIG they were. I am just glad to say that at that moment my dork flag was not flying the highest in the room. Boo-yah!

is there something wrong with me....

.....if I am just not that into Orlando Bloom? He seems to be the "it" guy, and I just kind of feel "EH" about him. Should I be concerned?

yo-ho, yo-ho, a ho-hum sequel at sea

My roommate/partner-in-crime Richard LOVES Keira Knightley with a passion that knows no bounds. So, it was a given that we would be going to see "Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest" on opening weekend. I didn't mind too much though....Johnny Depp is one actor that I enjoy watching in a creepy/stalker way. Anyway, we got to the theatre over an hour early (after eating at Dallas BBQ) and waiting patiently in line. Well, maybe not patiently, but I certainly didn't freak out and attack the popcorn person. Anyway, the movie was....okay. The real problem was that it just seemed long. Some of the fight scenes were incredible, and Keira and Orlando are so pretty together...and the ocean is gorgeous, but it was just a movie that sat there. It has MMS. (Middle movie syndrome) It was basically a vehicle to set up what is happening in the third, which hopefully will get back the "magic" of the first. The last scene in the movie is incredible....people gasped and clapped. I think I smiled...but didn't clap. Anyway, I digress....it's not that the movie was bad, it just wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. However, if you are a fan, and will want to see all three of the films, you should definitely check this one out on the big screen to see the boats and fighting in their big-*** glory.

Final thought: Okay. Not as good as the first, but has some great moments worth seeing on the big screen. Don't go in with your expectations too high.

quote of the day

"I just don't trust a man dancing with an axe."

Said by my partner in crime last night while we were watching "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."
Side note: If you haven't seen this musical classic....you must check it out. It is one of the best musicals ever made, and it takes place on a farm in 1850. There is an unbelievable barn dance that will take your breath away. Plus, the second oldest brother Benjamin is a TOTAL hottie. It is a perfect movie one night when you are home alone....make some popcorn and sit back and enjoy the show.

the lake house of tears

I heart Keanu Reeves. The oft criticized actor does a lovely job in the summer movie "The Lake House" with Sandra Bullock. This is kind of a funny movie to talk about. It's not that I didn't like it or enjoy it, because honestly, I totally did. It was sweet and romantic, with plot holes the size of a major European country. My big complaint is that it is kind of a mopey movie. Everyone is wandering around depressed. It was rather depressing. Except....it wasn't meant to be a depressing movie.....I don't think. I know that what I am rambling on about doesn't make sense (I am sad to admit that that is true about me most of the time) but I feel kind of stuck about this one. I think it is one that you might get on a rainy Sunday afternoon from Blockbuster or put it on your Netflix list...there is no reason to see it on the big screen....unless you love Keanu with all your heart. One bonus is that they showed the trailer for "Holiday" which is the next big-budget movie that Kate Winslet is doing. (I am slightly obsessed with her, so I apologize if I use a lot of exclamation points when I speak about anything having to do with her!!!!!!!) This film is coming out in December....urgh, I want it now! Anyway, it is directed by Nancy Meyers who did "Something's Gotta Give" and it is a romantic comedy co-starring Jack Black (not sure how I feel about that) and Cameron Diaz and Jude Law (cheater). It looks so good, and you should definitely check out the preview which can be seen at www.movieweb.com. Yeah for Kate!!

it's a bird....it's a plane....it's a fabulous superman movie!!

It was everything I had hoped for and more. When it comes to superhero movies, there are two kinds of films that get made. First, you get the cheesy, good fun ones that you watch, eat your popcorn, and thoroughly enjoy. I think of something like "The Phantom" for this kind. It is a fabulous (terrible) flick starring Billy Zane and a very young Catherine Zeta Jones as a villain to boot. Then, you have the kind of superhero film that breaks your heart. It is brilliant, exciting, and you become personally invested in the characters. An example of this would be the brilliant "Spiderman" franchise directed by Sam Raimi. "Superman Returns" falls into the second category. It is fun, the action sequences are unbelievable, it is also hilarious, and the actors are great. I thought when I watched the preview that Kevin Spacey might be too much as Lex Luthor, but he is so great. Kudos to Parker Posey for making a thankless part both funny and engaging. Kate Bosworth is surprising as Lois Lane...surprising in the fact that I thought she was decent, and did a good job. Brandon Routh is adorable as Clark Kent/Superman. Although, to be honest, he sometimes looks so much like Christopher Reeves that it is downright creepy. Bryan Singer proves yet again what an accomplished director he is...and that he has the superhero crown firmly in his hands. So....this is definitely one to see on the big screen. Run...do not walk....to the theatre, grab your popcorn, and sit down for a fun-yet-meaningful movie. Total bonus: The "Spiderman 3" teaser is UNBELIEVABLE!!! It is going to be fabulous!!
